Derby: A Rich History and a Bright Future

  • 365,000 people live in Derby
  • 1million in East Midlands
  • 6million in 50 mile radius
  • Can reach 80% of the UK in 4 hours drive

That’s why we picked Derby as our flagship site for SmartParc.

We will build upon Derby’s heritage as a site of world-class production, in order to provide food to communities in the most efficient and sustainable way.

Part of the Food Manufacturing Triangle of the East Midlands, Leicester and Derby, Derby has excellent transport links, and along with our shared distribution centre, will allow businesses to combine their range to provide a forward-thinking and comprehensive delivery offer.

From the very beginning of its life as a production facility, the site in Spondon has been the centre of innovation. During the First World War, the site was home to a pioneering acetate production plant, playing a vital role developing material used to waterproof the wings of early military aircraft.

It is fitting that a location with an unrivalled history of cutting-edge engineering is home to the very first SmartParc.

The creation of this dedicated asset class is pivotal in achieving a more sustainable future for food production and giving a framework for the food industry to build upon. We want to embrace Derby’s engineering heritage to ensure that SmartParc is the home of the next food revolution.
